Ski Path

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 28 October 2026

Ski Path is made by Bytefern Ltd. This policy covers the Ski Path apps for iPhone and Android and the skipath.app website. It explains what data they use, where it goes, and how to delete it.

In Short

  • Without an account, everything stays on your device.
  • With an account, we store what's needed to share trips with friends: your name, your trips and the places saved to them.
  • Sharing your live location is optional, and it's only used so the friends on your trip can find you on the map. It's shared only while you have it turned on, only with the people on that trip, and it's deleted within 4 hours.
  • No ads, no selling your data, and no tracking you across other apps or websites.

Your Location

Ski Path uses your location to show where you are on the ski map, to plan a route from where you are, and to follow a route as you ski, including with your phone locked. This all happens on your device.

  • Planning a route sends our server the resort and the start and end points on the trail map, not your coordinates.
  • Following a route keeps your progress on your device, so it can carry on if you close the app. Nothing about it is sent to us.
  • Your location only leaves your device if you share it with a trip (see below), and through Mapbox's map data collection if it's on (see Services We Use).

Without an Account

Saved routes, labels, favourite resorts, and the trips and places you keep to yourself are stored on your device only. Deleting the app deletes them.

With an Account

To share a trip with friends, you sign in: with Apple on iPhone, or with Google on Android. We then store:

  • Your account: your Sign in with Apple ID and the email address Apple gives us (a private relay address if you choose Hide My Email), or your Google account ID and email address; your name; and your settings, such as battery saver.
  • Trips you share: each trip's name, resort and dates, its invite code, the names of the people on it, and the places added to it (each place's name, type, position and who added it).
  • Your live location, only if you choose to share it: your position, how accurate it is, your name and the time. It's used for one thing: so the people on the trip can see where you are on their map.

How Live Location Sharing Works

  • It's optional. It's off until you turn it on for a trip, you can turn it off at any time, and everything else in Ski Path works without it.
  • Away from the ski area it pauses and your position is removed, so friends don't see where you're staying.
  • It stops by itself at 6 pm (or at midnight if you turn it on after 5 pm), and when the trip ends.
  • When sharing stops, your position is deleted. Any position left behind (for example, if your phone runs out of battery) is deleted automatically within 4 hours of when it was last updated.
  • Battery saver sends your position less often and less precisely.

Who Can See Your Trip

Only people who've joined a trip with its invite code see its places, the names of the people on it and their live locations. Anyone with the code can join, so only share it with people you want on the trip.

Services We Use

  • Apple: Sign in with Apple. The step shown on your lock screen while you follow a route (a Live Activity) is created on your device.
  • Google: Sign in with Google on Android.
  • Google Firebase: sign-in, and the database for shared trips.
  • Mapbox: draws the maps in the apps and on the website. Mapbox can collect de-identified location and usage data from the maps in the apps to improve its products. In the iPhone app this is off unless you turn it on; in the Android app it's on until you turn it off. Either way, tap the ⓘ on the map and open the Mapbox telemetry option. See the Mapbox privacy policy.
  • Google Play services (Android): provides your location to the app on your device.
  • Formspree (website): if you send feedback from the website, your message and the address of the page you were on reach us through Formspree.
  • PostHog (EU): anonymous usage analytics in the apps and on the website. See Usage Analytics below.
  • Google Analytics (website): how visitors find and use the website, with cookies only if you allow them. See Our Website below.

Like any app or website, our hosting providers see your IP address when you connect, and may keep it in their logs. Our servers and these providers may process data outside the UK, including in the United States.

Usage Analytics

The apps and the website send anonymous usage data to PostHog, hosted in the EU, so we can see which screens and features are used and fix what isn't working. This is:

  • The screens you open, and a few actions: planning a route (with the resort and difficulty chosen), following a route, and creating a shared trip.
  • Your device type, operating system, app or browser version, language, and your approximate country, worked out from your IP address.
  • A random identifier made by the app or website to tell visits apart. It isn't linked to your name, email address or account, and it's reset if you delete the app or clear your browser's storage. On the website it's only kept in your browser if you allow analytics cookies; otherwise it lasts until you leave the page.

It doesn't include your location, your route's coordinates, the names of your trips or friends, or recordings of your screen. We don't use it for advertising or sell it.

Our Website

skipath.app uses PostHog for the analytics above, and Google Analytics to see how visitors find the website, such as which search or link brought them and whether they went on to the App Store or Google Play. The first time you visit, we ask whether they can keep an identifier in your browser (cookies and browser storage). If you say no, neither keeps one, and Google Analytics only counts the visit. You can change your answer at any time with Cookie settings, here or at the foot of the home page. We don't use advertising cookies, and neither is used for ads. If you let your browser share your location with the route planner, it's used in your browser to find the nearest point on the trail map, and isn't sent to us.

What We Don't Do

  • No advertising, and we never sell your data.
  • No tracking you across other companies' apps or websites.
  • No analytics that identify you, and no recording of your screen.

Keeping and Deleting Your Data

  • On your device: kept until you delete it, or the app.
  • Live locations: deleted when sharing stops, and never kept more than 4 hours.
  • Shared trips: kept until the trip's owner deletes it. Leaving a trip removes you from it, along with your position and the places you added.
  • Your account: delete it in the app under Account, then Delete account, or ask us (see Delete your Ski Path account). This deletes your profile, takes you off your trips (with your position and the places you added), deletes the trips you own with everything in them, and on iPhone disconnects Sign in with Apple.

Why We Use Your Data

  • To provide the features you use, such as sharing trips (our contract with you).
  • To share your live location with your trip, which is optional and only happens when you turn it on (your consent, which you withdraw by turning sharing off).
  • To keep our service running and secure, and to understand how the apps and website are used so we can improve them (our legitimate interests).

Your Rights

You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it, by emailing mail@bytefern.app. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Children's Privacy

Ski Path isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.

Changes

We'll post any changes at skipath.app/privacy and update the date at the top.
